Carried out with precise rules of procedure and behavior, and often with special music and costumes, they reflect the people’s beliefs in the powers and requirements of supernatural forces or beings whose help and approval are sought — generally or on specific occasions (such as the advent of the growing season, when rain is needed) — for the society’s well-being and survival. But in publicly enacting sacred beliefs, they set the stamp on important cultural attitudes, teaching and enforcing acceptance of traditional moral rules necessary for the group’s homogeneity and cohesion.
